Internet Safety - Debit Card Security

In recent times, more consumers have debit cards than credit cards and consumers use debit cards more often than cash, credit cards, and cheques individually as most people think using your PIN is the safest way to pay. But debit cards are also used fraudulently.

Following are some measures to protect your debit card from fraud charges-
• Memorize your PIN and change it regularly to avoid risk
• Avoid using easily obtainable information like date of birth, phone number etc. as your PIN
• Never share your PIN with anyone and never write it down anywhere
• While keying in your PIN at an ATM or a point of sale terminal, cover the keypad with your hand/body so that nobody could see it
• Keep ATM receipts and transaction slips and compare with the account balance regularly through online/mobile banking
• Make sure that the card is swiped at a point of sale terminal in your presence to avoid double swiping or swiping through two different devices
• Register with the bank/financial institution to receive SMS alerts
• Beware of phishing. Never disclose your PIN over phone or respond to any email asking your PIN or any account information
• Use only secured websites (look for ‘https’ in the URL) when shopping online
• Immediately call your financial institution or police if the card gets jammed in an ATM or los
